Current projects

Aurora Art: The pilot will engage primary age students and young families with UoS aurora research through the AuroraZoo project by the Solar Environment Physics (SEP) group. Building on our experience of using language and the arts in combination with science research subjects this pilot will focus more on storytelling. The children’s fiction book and workshops will showcase the story of the scientist working to unravel the mysteries of the aurora’s shapes and movement in the Arctic but being interrupted by polar bears looking for food. By the end of the pilot, students will also understand how both the humans and polar bears who live in Svalbard are affected by climate change and how research into the aurora can be used to better understand climate change.

Black Hole poetry: a cross-disciplinary project merging black hole research from the University of Southampton astronomy group and poetry aimed at year 5 students.

‘Learning about the aurora’: this is a repeat intervention program focused on year 8 students at local widening participation schools.

Past Projects

SotonAstroArt: this project worked with emerging artists to engage the public with Supernova group research via artwork using photographic plates of the whole cosmos.
